Reform’s Robert Jenrick ‘very confident’ £72m donations are ‘perfectly legal’ – as it happened

September 15, 2026 • 2 min read

Robert Jenrick has expressed strong confidence that the record breaking seventy two million pounds in donations received by Reform UK are perfectly legal, despite growing scrutiny over the source of the funds. The massive windfall came via two separate thirty six million pound injections from cryptocurrency billionaires Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo, marking the largest single donations in the history of British politics. Speaking on Sky News, Jenrick described the funding as a breakthrough moment for the party, though he remained vague when asked if the money would be returned should it be found to violate upcoming legislation.

The controversy centers on a proposed government bill designed to curb foreign influence in domestic politics by limiting donations from British expatriates who have lived abroad recently. Both donors have ties to overseas residences, with Harborne based in Thailand and Delo having recently returned from Hong Kong. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has warned that these new rules could be applied retrospectively, meaning Reform might eventually be forced to pay back the sums if they fall foul of the updated law. Rayner suggested that such astronomical figures highlight an urgent need to examine exactly who is funding political movements in the United Kingdom.

While the financial boost allows Reform to drastically scale up its electoral machinery through increased staffing and advertising across social media, critics argue it may damage the party’s image. Political analysts suggest that Nigel Farage’s positioning as a champion of ordinary citizens is undermined when his movement appears to be funded by ultra wealthy investors disconnected from daily struggles. There are also concerns that the sheer size of the endowment brings unwanted attention to internal finances and creates a perception of sleaze surrounding the leadership.

Despite these challenges, Jenrick continues to frame the investment as an economic opportunity for Britain within the crypto sector. For now, Reform seems poised to utilize its newfound wealth to challenge established parties in seats across the country, even as Labour pushes forward with legislative efforts to ensure such massive payments cannot bypass transparency requirements moving forward.
