Trump, first lady to visit North Carolina

September 15, 2026 • 2 min read

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are scheduled to make separate trips to North Carolina this week, arriving amid a high stakes battle for an open U.S. Senate seat that has captured national interest leading up to the November midterms. President Trump is expected to appear Wednesday evening at the Gastonia Municipal Airport in Gaston County, just west of Charlotte. This stop comes shortly after his weekend travels in Ireland, where he spent time meeting with local leaders and attending the Irish Open at his own Doonbeg golf course.

The presidential visit is designed to bolster the campaign of Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee who is currently locked in a fierce contest against former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper. The seat, vacated by Senator Thom Tillis, has become a focal point of the midterm cycle. In a recent social media post announcing the visit, Whatley emphasized that the president requires a strong ally in the Senate and argued that North Carolina deserves a fighter to ensure victory on November 3.

While the president focuses on political campaigning, Melania Trump will take a more humanitarian approach during her stay in the state. According to the White House, she plans to visit an elementary school in Ashe County to discuss technology and resilience with students. Her visit highlights the ongoing recovery efforts in western North Carolina, an area that suffered catastrophic flooding when it was struck by the remnants of Hurricane Helene.

As both candidates intensify their outreach efforts, gubernatorial hopeful Roy Cooper continues his own campaign tour with upcoming stops such as Goldsboro. Meanwhile, voters are already beginning to engage with the process; state election officials started mailing out absentee ballots earlier this month, and official early in person voting is set to begin on October 15.
