Patrick Mahomes made his long awaited return to the gridiron on Monday night, but it was Kenneth Walker who stole the spotlight in a dominant 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. Returning for the first time in nine months after recovering from torn ACL and LCL ligaments, Mahomes played a supporting role in an offensive strategy that prioritized the ground game. The Chiefs leaned heavily on their rushing attack, racking up 220 yards on the floor, marking one of the most productive running performances under Andy Reid during the team’s tenure in Kansas City.
Walker, the former Super Bowl LX MVP who joined the Chiefs via free agency, proved why he is now the centerpiece of the offense. In a staggering individual performance, Walker rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries while adding another score through the air. His total output of 191 yards from scrimmage actually surpassed the entire Broncos offense, which managed only 176 total yards throughout the evening. This outing represented a new career high for Walker, eclipsing his previous best set early in his professional career.
While Mahomes looked steady enough with a rushing touchdown and two passing scores to Rashee Rice and Walker, he showed some signs of rust, finishing 15-of-27 for 184 yards with one interception. However, those numbers were far more impressive than anything coming from Denver. Bo Nix struggled immensely in his own return from a season ending ankle injury and his debut with Davis Webb calling plays. Nix turned the ball over multiple times and finished with just 131 passing yards, unable to find any rhythm against a stifling Kansas City defense.
The game remained competitive through much of the first half, with Denver trailing only 14-7 at halftime, but they completely collapsed in the second half due to a lack of balance. While Kansas City dominated with their physical presence on the ground, the Broncos were held to a meager 61 rushing yards on just 15 attempts. Aside from a nineteen yard touchdown catch by Evan Engram, there were few highlights for a Denver squad that was simply overwhelmed by Walker’s explosive speed and power.
