Ohio State, Texas, Oregon Top The Athletic’s CFB Roster Spending Estimates in New Report

September 17, 2026 • 2 min read

The financial landscape of college football has reached staggering new heights according to a recent report from The Athletic. In an analysis covering 68 teams across the Power Four conferences and Notre Dame, reporters Stewart Mandel, David Ubben, and Sam Khan Jr. revealed that Name, Image, and Likeness spending is now reaching tens of millions of dollars per roster. Ohio State currently leads the pack with an estimated NIL budget ranging between 49 million and 54 million dollars, followed closely by Oregon and Texas.

The data highlights a clear concentration of wealth within the Big Ten and SEC, which claim all five of the highest-spending spots in the country. Other heavy hitters include LSU, Texas A&M, and Miami, while traditional powerhouses like Notre Dame and Alabama also remain firmly entrenched in the top ten. This surge in spending appears to be translating directly to on-field success, as every single one of the fourteen highest-spending programs is currently ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 following the second week of the season.

While money often buys talent, it does not always guarantee immediate perfection. Eight of the top ten spenders are currently top ten teams themselves, including the first-ranked Texas Longhorns. However, some programs have struggled to find a return on their investment early on. Oregon stands out as a significant outlier; despite having one of the highest spending ceilings in the nation, they have tumbled to number twenty-one in the rankings after a surprising loss to Oklahoma State.

Despite those early stumbles for some high rollers, analysts believe these investments will pay dividends long term. For example, Oregon remains one of the most talented squads in college football thanks to stars like quarterback Dante Moore. With plenty of season left for head coach Dan Lanning to steady his team, many expect these heavily funded rosters to eventually dominate the College Football Playoff picture by December.
