Mike Vrabel: A.J. Brown still undergoing tests, unsure of Week 2 availability

September 11, 2026 • 2 min read

Uncertainty continues to cloud the status of star receiver A.J. Brown following a frustrating exit from the New England Patriots’ recent matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Mike Vrabel remained guarded during his Thursday press conference, refusing to confirm reports that Brown suffered a high ankle sprain despite widespread speculation about the severity of the injury.

Brown went down early in the third quarter on Wednesday night, though he was fortunately able to walk off the field under his own power. The injury cut short what was meant to be a landmark performance, as it occurred during Brown’s official debut with the team. He managed just three receptions for 26 yards before being forced toward the locker room for immediate medical attention.

Vrabel emphasized that the organization is still in the process of gathering information and has not yet finalized a diagnosis. According to the coach, additional tests are currently underway to determine exactly what happened to Brown’s ankle. Until those results come back, any timeline for a return remains purely speculative, leaving his availability for next week very much in doubt.

As New England prepares to host Pittsburgh for their Week 2 clash, they may have to navigate the game without one of their primary offensive weapons. Vrabel expressed confidence in Brown’s work ethic and desire to return quickly, noting that once the final medical reports are processed, the training staff will establish a formal treatment plan moving forward.
