MAC files appeal to FBS committee to overturn Western Michigan-Michigan game, declare Broncos as winners

September 9, 2026 • 2 min read

What looked like one of the most shocking upsets of the college football season has evolved into a bureaucratic battle between conferences. For several breathless moments at Michigan Stadium, it appeared the Western Michigan Broncos had secured a historic 12-7 victory over the heavily favored Michigan Wolverines. However, after a controversial review determined there was one second remaining on the clock despite broadcasts showing zero, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood launched a successful Hail Mary to JJ Buchanan to steal the win. While many observers were baffled by the decision at the time, the fallout is only now reaching its peak.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Mid-American Conference escalated the dispute by filing a formal appeal with the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff. The MAC is requesting that both organizations officially recognize Western Michigan as the true winner of the contest for ranking and evaluation purposes. According to a statement from the conference, an internal investigation revealed that replay protocols were ignored. Specifically, they argue that officials should have relied on the program feed clock rather than an embedded replay system feed, which erroneously granted Michigan an extra single second of play.

The core of the argument rests on technicalities rather than a debate over how much time actually existed on the clock. The MAC contends that because established rules dictate using televised production evidence for reviews, no additional play should have ever been awarded. By failing to follow this sequence, they claim Michigan was unfairly gifted a winning score that contradicts official protocol. This move represents a significant show of support for Western Michigan, who lost not only a game but potentially a massive boost toward playoff contention by falling short against a top-tier opponent.

Despite the confidence shown by the MAC, sports analysts suggest that overturning an on-field result is nearly impossible in collegiate athletics. Historically, results decided during live gameplay rarely change regardless of officiating errors or procedural lapses. Furthermore, powerhouses like Michigan typically receive substantial benefit of the doubt in high-stakes disputes involving oversight committees. In response to the appeal, the Big Ten remains steadfast, issuing a brief statement confirming they stand by their original determination and will offer no further comment on the matter.
