Australian social media users to be offered choice to opt out of algorithms

September 9, 2026 • 2 min read

Australian social media users may soon have the power to silence the invisible hand guiding their digital experiences. Under a new set of proposed laws announced Tuesday in Canberra, the government plans to mandate that platforms provide users over the age of 16 with genuine options to opt out of recommendation algorithms. This shift aims to return control to the individual, allowing them to decide whether they want a curated stream of AI-driven suggestions or a simple chronological feed featuring only the friends and creators they intentionally follow.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that these empowerment tools are designed to hold big tech companies accountable for how they shape user behavior. To ensure compliance, the government is proposing steep financial penalties for platforms that ignore these requirements, with potential fines reaching as high as 109.2 million Australian dollars. New and existing users would receive notifications prompting them to select their preferred default feed, moving away from the industry standard where personalized algorithms are automatically imposed upon every account.

Beyond adult autonomy, the proposed Digital Duty of Care legislation places a heavy emphasis on protecting minors from harmful content. The laws seek to shield children from material promoting eating disorders, pornography, criminal activity, and dangerous stunts, while also targeting design features intended to create addiction or damage self-esteem. These measures extend beyond traditional social networks to include online gaming apps and artificial intelligence chatbots, signaling a broader regulatory crackdown on predatory digital architecture.

This latest initiative builds on Australia’s aggressive stance toward online safety, following world first laws introduced last December that banned children under 16 from using major platforms like TikTok and Instagram. With the national online safety watchdog already weighing legal action against several tech giants for failing to enforce age limits, this new proposal represents another step in Australia’s effort to redefine the relationship between citizens and global technology corporations.
