Trump calls for a Bombardier plane ban, drawing pushback from a GOP senator

September 8, 2026 • 2 min read

President Donald Trump escalated his ongoing trade conflict with Canada on Monday by calling for a total ban on the sale of Bombardier aircraft within the United States. In a series of posts on Truth Social, the president claimed that the Canadian aerospace giant’s products were not good enough and accused the company of using America as a piggybank. He argued that because Bombardier relies so heavily on American buyers, airports, and service providers, it should be forced to shift its manufacturing entirely to U.S. soil, especially while he claims Canada continues to block American banks and companies.

The proposal immediately triggered friction within the president’s own party, specifically from Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas. With Wichita serving as the hub for Bombardier’s U.S. operations, Moran quickly pushed back via social media, highlighting that the company employs over a thousand people in his state alone. The senator emphasized that these workers provide critical expertise to national defense and aerospace capabilities and confirmed that he had contacted the administration to ensure the president understood how damaging such a ban would be to the local economy and supply chain.

For its part, Bombardier issued a strong defense of its role in the American economy, asserting that it creates tens of thousands of jobs across more than twenty states. The company pointed out that much of its production is already happening domestically, noting that wings for their fastest business jets are manufactured in Texas and flight control components are produced in California. They further highlighted upcoming expansions in Indiana as evidence of their commitment to investing in American labor and infrastructure.

This latest dispute unfolds against a backdrop of intensifying economic warfare between Washington and Ottawa. Just hours after Trump’s comments, Canada implemented retaliatory tariffs on nearly 20 billion dollars worth of American goods in response to previous U.S. levies. This cycle of tariffs and provocative gestures, which recently included an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, arrives at a sensitive time as both parties navigate political pressures ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
